FAQ

Have a Question?

  • What are the minimum requirements for my 4WD vehicle to go on Tour to Cape York?

Deeper water crossings are not usually in this Tour so your vehicle should be capable of traversing the crossings we encounter, however, with recent rainfall there may be deeper crossings.

Your guide will advise you further before you decide to undertake any crossing.

  • How do I prepare my 4WD for the tour?

Ensure your 4WD vehicle has been maintained and serviced regularly leading up to the Tour.

Get your vehicle professionally checked and serviced just prior to the tour ensuring all fluids are at correct levels with no leaks. All belts are in good condition also. If they are near due to be changed it may be a good idea to change them early.

Check your suspension is in good condition, a heavy duty style is a good idea but not essential. Check the health of your battery, mountings are solid, and inspect your wheel bearings.

Ensure the spare wheel(s) are in good condition as they will need to travel many Km’s if you get a puncture/blow out.

  • When is payment due for tours ?

A deposit of 20% is required when making your booking or as agreed in writing.

Full payment must be paid by 90 days prior to departure date.

  • Do you offer Insurance ?

Aussie 4WD Tag Along Tours carries Public Liability Insurance, however we ecourage you to organise your own personal Travel & Vehicle insurances.

  • What if we can't make the tour dates?

Our full cancellation policies are listed in our Terms and Conditions document found at the bottom of this website.

  • What spares should I take with me?

A small tool kit is advisable, as basic equipment for your Tour Package, but the Guide also carries more tools if needed.

A few essential items to consider are: fuel filter, air filter, radiator hoses, fan belts, spare hoses, fluids, oils, coolant, and variety of fuses and wiring.

Small tool kit is advisable, equipment is needed in your Tour Package, but the Guide also has more tools if needed.

Duct Tape and Cable Ties are handy additions to your kit and can hold things together very well at times.

  • Do I need recovery gear?

All 4WD vehicles need to have basic recovery kit, including a snatch strap and appropriately rated shackles.

If you have something like Maxtrax and vehicle winch, that’s even better. Our Lead vehicle has winches to assist also.

  • Do I need radio equipment in my vehicle?

Your vehicle must have a UHF radio, either installed in the vehicle or a good quality hand-held model.

If you opt for a handheld, please ensure it’s a 5w-unit. If needed, we can hire one for you.

Your mobile phone, on most Tours is useless most of the time. Telstra provider is the most reliable but is still very sporadic coverage at best.

We travel with a HF radio which has a locator ping facility which is sent at the end of every day, so home base knows the Tours location. It also is used in case of emergency and the radio has and emergency option to contact services such as RFDS and local stations urgently if required. The HF Radio is the most reliable communication method as transmits in all weather and terrain.

  • What camping gear should I pack?

Depends on your preference, rooftop, ground tents or swags, are all suitable. Any exceptions are listed in Specific Tour Information.

We hire Ground Tents and Swags in Camping Packages if equipment is needed in your Tour Package. Hire as a complete package or just the gear you require.

  • Can Camper trailers or Caravans be towed on Tour?

Camper Trailers or hybrid off road small vans are allowed on some Tours with an extra fee applicable. See Specific Tour Information for details.

  • What night time temperature bedding do we need?

On our desert region Tours, the nights can get very cold, even though the days are very warm. So, warm sleeping gear and clothing is a must. It’s a good idea to insulate under your bed to keep the cold out.

Cape York Tours are usually warmer day and night until the last 2 nights, as they are spent camping on the tablelands and can be cold so pack a set of warm clothes and extra blanket or ensure your sleeping bag covers down to prob 5C to be safe.

  • What personal equipment should I pack?

Pack light, and pack clothes that can handle the coloured dirt, clothes that you don’t mind discarding after the Tour, as they will stain.

Plan appropriate clothing for the Tour as some nights can get cold, and you’re likely to be exposed to the elements more when camping.

Cape York Tour can get cold in July, so small amount of warm clothes are important. Day time clothes are a different story, most Tours are warm to hot days and summer clothes are ideal. Quick dry clothes is what many people in the north wear, so it doesn’t matter if you get wet. Also wrinkle free.

Remember your toiletries, towels(camping towels take less space and dry quickly), and toilet paper(you never know when you need some).

Wet wipes are handy to refresh and clean during the day if needed. If shower facilities are not available – hot camp shower is on the Guides vehicle for everyone’s use.      Laundry powder or liquid is required for your laundry washing on Tour. The laundries sometimes available at caravan parks don’t usually supply detergent.

Miscellaneous items to bring: a shovel, a long-handled stove lighter, Insect Repellent/Mozzie Bracelet/Patches and/or Mosquito coils. Some people like Citronella Candles also. Caution with camping and candles burning. Some also like to use face nets when the flies become too friendly. There is also a few different creams for bite relief available as well. Local advice in Cairns may be best as different remedies for different bites.
